Strangely, the reelection of President Donald J. Trump (R-New York) could be good for Democrats and the left.
This statement flies in the face of conventional wisdom but recent history supports it. Democrats and leftists have made impressive gains since Trump’s “victory” in 2016.
Democratic gains in Trump’s America include:
Recapturing the governor’s offices in several states.
Nevada, New Mexico, Maine, Kentucky, Kansas, Illinois, New Jersey, Wisconsin, Louisiana, and Michigan are among the states that have elected Democratic governors in the last three years. Notably, Democrats won governor’s races in the supposedly “Red states of Louisiana, Kansas, and Kentucky.
In fact, Democrats are close to controlling a majority of the nation’s governorships, NPR estimates. Interestingly, Trump has not helped Republicans keep governor’s mansions. In Kentucky; a state Trump carried by 30% in 2016, Republican Matt Bevin lost the governor’s race.
Regaining control of the US House of Representatives in 2018. Notably, the Democrats captured House seats in some historic Republic strongholds including Orange County, California.
Winning a U.S. Senate race in Alabama, a Deep South state where Democrats are supposedly unelectable. Capturing several Republican house seats in the South, including former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich’s old seat the Sixth District in the Atlanta suburbs. Additionally, Democrats won House seats in South Carolina, Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas in 2018.
Winning control of both houses of Virginia’s legislature for the first time in 20 years. In addition, The Texas Tribune speculates Democrats could take control of Texas state legislature’s lower house in 2020.
Finally, Democrats waged competitive governor’s races in Georgia and Florida and a competitive U.S. Senate Race in Texas in 2018. In other words, Democrats did well all across the map in 2018.
Leftist wins in Trump’s America include:
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s (D-New York) surprise defeat of Nancy Pelosi henchman U.S. Representative Joe Crowley (D-New York) in a primary race.
The election of the most left-wing governor in America; the openly gay Jared Polis (D-Boulder) in Colorado, in 2018. Polis’s promises in Colorado include free full-day kindergarten and free preschool for all children.
The success of left-wing candidates in the Democratic presidential primaries. Leftist U.S. Senators Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont) and Liz Warren (D-Massachusetts) are leading in the California Democratic presidential primary, The LA Times estimates.
In contrast, moderate former Vice President Joe Biden (D-Delaware) has 14% to Sanders’ 24% and Warren’s 22% in California. Moreover, prominent moderate U.S. Senator Kamala Harris (D-California) dropped out of the presidential race because of a lack of support.
The vast amount of attention the media is focusing on the four left-wing Congresswomen they call the Squad. The Squad’s members are Ilhan Omar (D-Minnesota), Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-New York), Rashida Tlaib (D-Michigan), and Ayanna Pressley (D-Massachusetts).
Promoting left-wing legislation including an ambitious law that could lower drug prices enabling Medicare to negotiate prescription prices, Vox reports. The U.S. Senate is expected to ignore the proposal. In addition, the Democrats successfully pushed the House U.S. of Representatives to launch impeachment proceedings against Trump.
The Left Does Well in Trump’s America
Hence, the Left and the Democrats are doing well in Trump’s America. Perhaps both conservatives and progressives need to ask themselves how far will the left go in a second Trump term?
Therefore, I’m starting to regard 2016 as a victory for Democrats and the Left. Notably, we avoided the catastrophe of a Hillary R. Clinton (D-New York) presidency.
Interestingly, Clinton’s behavior is becoming increasingly erratic and paranoid. For example, Clinton is accusing U.S. Representative and presidential candidate Tulsi Gabbard (D-Hawaii) of being a Russian asset. Gabbard’s crime; in Hillary’s eyes, was to question Clinton’s foreign policy ideas.
Is Hillary Going Nuts?
Additionally, Hillary sounded Republican in an interview with shock jock Howard Stern. For instance, Clinton mocked Bernie Sanders’ free college plan which she compares to chocolate milk.
Bizarrely, Hillary now calls Sanders a Russian asset too, Republic World claims.
Disturbingly, Hillary and Howard appeared to mock free school lunches for poor children in a clip of the interview played on the 13 December Useful Idiots podcast.
I can only imagine what the paranoid Hillary could do in control of U.S. Intelligence assets. Would she order the FBI or IRS to investigate people such as Gabbard and Sanders?
Thus, it looks as if Democrats and the Left got lucky in 2016. I have to wonder if luck will favor them again in 2020. Perhaps, a Trump win in 2020 could lead to a Democratic majority in both houses of Congress and a leftist in the White House in 2024. Perhaps President Andrew Yang (D-New York)?
Republicans and conservatives who gloat at the prospect of a Trump victory next year had better be careful what they wish for. I suspect they will not enjoy the long-term results of a second Trump term.
